Tis the season! I kept hearing the “Something About Us” in heavy rotation on my kiddos playlist. As I thought about doing my next mix with a Christmas theme, “Last Christmas” quickly came to mind, as I thought it would pair well with this Daft Punk classic. It was exciting to work on it.

These two songs have crazy similar themes! I believe the lyrics go smashing together. Quickly, I noticed that the keys were off. So, I took Daft Punk’s track up three semitones to help bring them into harmony. Fans of “Something About Us” will notice that the vocals sound higher pitched.

I selected 104 BPM since that was the default BPM of the Daft Punk track on YouTube. Turns out, the original studio track is 100 BPM. I realized that the official video has this light raining sound during the intro build-up that slowly goes away after 20 seconds. I would have ignored it, but I needed to cut and copy the intro further into the track, so the sudden rain sound vibrating again didn’t sit well with me.

Wham!’s vocals could get really loud at some points, so I had to adjust the levels of many segments to keep the mix balanced. I looped a segment of “Something About Us” to ensure good movement with the vocals.

I’m very pleased with the mellow tone and chill vibes this mashup radiates.

1. My HP laptop running Windows 11.
2. Nero Downloader Ultimate to convert the Wham! acapella track and the daft punk album track from YouTube to MP3.
3. Magix ACID 11 to arrange, Beatmap and mix all the audio files.

Fun Fact: I almost scrapped this when I suddenly learned that there has already been a mashup of Wham’s Last Christmas with Daft Punk! It does feel that their song “Instant Crush” eerily sounds like Last Christmas in a few regards. But after listening to this mix again, I think it goes just as good. Thanks for listening!
