My kiddos have been playing the song 7 Years by Lukas Graham in slight rotation over the past few months. It’s a great song! When I decided to use this for my next mix, I wanted to change things up and get a bit creative! Since 7 Years takes us on a journey through the life and time of the singer, perhaps there is a popular song about time that could work for this mix.

Thinking it though, I didn’t want to find just any random song to compliment Graham’s track. So I hit up the search engines and found a list of songs about time. Examining the list, Pink Floyd stood out, though it’s important to note that I only have vague familiarity with them. While I do know their infamous album cover of the prism with the rainbow for Dark Side of the Moon, they apparently have a song simply called “Time”. I timed the track and it was 60 BPM, just like 7 Years! I took this as a sign and figured I had to at least test it.

I fell in love! This mix is pretty dang dope. I’m not partial to rock music, but hearing these two tracks together is blissful. As the guitar shredding throughout the Time track can get intense, so does Graham’s singing in some of the verses. When those moments line up, this track ignites!

Composing this track had its challenges.

Since Pink Floyd’s track is performed “live” without the use of electronic sequencing, the tempo of the track does fluctuate. This causes problems since the vocals will get out of sync. Thankfully, my Acid software has some tools to account for that! Had to YouTube search it, but found exactly what I was looking for! In summary, it allows the option to have any measure in the song retimed to stay on the perfect 60 BPM!

Pink Floyd’s track is originally 7 minutes long, but Graham’s track is only 4 minutes. There is a lot of fluff at the start of Time that was a no brainer to cut out. I had to also shorten the beginning music of the track by about a minute or two, and then I also cut out a lot of end. For the hard core Pink Floyd fans, I mean no disrespect. I didn’t want the beat to keep playing without vocals, nor did I want to repeat any vocals just to fill it up.

And speak of the devil, you may have noticed I did repeat several lines from Grahams vocals. If I repeated a line that was already played before, most times I would add a heavy reverb effect and lower the volume just a few decibels. I did this for two reasons:

  1. To help with the transitions in the instrumental.
  2. To fill up any extended times without vocals.
  3. To make the line sound like a memory.

Fun Fact: The two tracks played naturally are out of harmony, as they start on different keys. It was noticeable enough that I had thoughts of scrapping the mix. However, just as I did with I Got 5 Heathens, I was able to change the key of Pink Floyd’s track up one semitone! This seems to bring it into perfect harmony! What do you think?

In the end, 44 years apart is a heck of a generation gap. Can hard core fans of Lukas Graham get down with a band like Pink Floyd? Same question for the hard core Floyd fans. I’m hoping for good reception of this mix, but who in the would would be caught dead having both of these bands on a same playlist?

Please share this mix with a friend who likes to rock! Thanks for listening!

  1. […] Krazy by 2pac was probably my most favorite track from The Don Killuminati album. I can’t explain why, but this song instinctively came to mind when pondering this project. In my head, I thought the tempos seem similar; and sure enough, they both perfectly match at 82 BPM! However, since Country Roads was recorded “live” without the use of electronic sequencing, the tempo shifts every now and then, throwing the mix off beat. But thanks to some awesome beat mapping technology built into Magix Acid Studio, this can be corrected! I shared this similar situation in my previous mix, 7 Years Time. […]
